The Great Blue Hole

This underwater sinkhole attracts divers far and wide as the holy grail of dive sites. What was once a limestone cave in the past soon collapsed into a sinkhole that’s 1,000 feet wide and over 400 feet deep. Back in 1971, renowned underwater explorer Jacques Cousteau deemed the mysterious Great Blue Hole as one of the top ten dive sites in the word as he sailed down the hole in his ship Calypso and explored its secrets in his TV show The Undersea World of Jacques-Yves Cousteau.

Since Cousteau’s visit, the Belize government has preserved the site and designated it a UNESCO World Heritage Location. The Great Blue Hole lies in the middle of Lighthouse Reef Atoll, and our divers are only 30 min boat ride away to visit vs. the 100 kilometres trip from Belize City to reach it. The tranquil abyss is located in between a ring of aqua-blue shallow water, and it’s surrounded by tropical aquatic life, such as sharks, barracuda and lobsters.

Once you approach the hole, you can easily tell when your adventure begins since the area quickly shifts into a dark blue colour with nearly no marine life inside. Scale along the limestone walls and don’t fret about a temperature change since the water typically stays warm above 27 degrees Celsius. Bask upon the architectural magnificence of stunning stalactites, stalagmites and columns that date back to the last ice age.
